ASTRONOMICAL

AN IMPORTANT EVENT. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 5. The New Zealand Astronomical Society draws attention to an important event—the transit of the planet Mercury over the sun’s dial on Thursday, May 8. As Mercury is small, it will be necessary to have a telescope to see the planet, which takes about 8 hours to cross the sun, beginning about 9.15 a.m., according to predicted time. Mercury will cross the sun almost centrally. It may be distinguished from any other sun spots by its rapid motion.
