DELUDED PEOPLE

DISEASE RAVAGING THEIR RANKS. MEDICAL SERVICES DECLINED. Received May 5, 9.30 p.m. NEW YORK, May 4. At Lebanon, Pennsylvania, disease has made terrible ravages among members of the Faith of the Tabernacle, a small religious sect residing here, whose tenets provide for the cure of all ailments through prayer. Seven members died from diphtheria during the past three weeks. No cognisance was taken of the first few deaths, but neighbours thereafter sent physicians, who, however, were not permitted to treat the afflicted. One family lost three members in a few days, but the surviving relatives only continued prayers. The authorities arc unable, under the law', to force medical attention upon the afflicted, and are compelled to merely quarantine the houses where deaths occurred. The sect, however, conceals information concerning the presence of disease, disclosures coming only after death.
