CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS The final for the ladies’ residential championship will be played this (Saturday) afternoon between Miss Myers (St. John’s) and Miss G. Calver (Wanganui) on Victoria Park at 1 p.m. The match will be the best of three advantage sets. Both players have displayed excellent form this season, more especially the former, so that a good hard match is anticipated. FINAL LADIES’ DOUBLES. The above match was played on Victoria Park on Wednesday afternoon last between Mrs Lane and Miss Myers (St. John’s) and Mrs Richardson and Miss Calver,-and won by the St. John’s ladies 8-6, 6-4. The match was hotly contested from beginning to end, characterised by long drives, clever angle shot and occasional tossing. St. John’s excelled at the net which somewhat upset the Wanganuitcs who were apparently not used to the net attack in ladies doubles. Wanganui made a splendid start in the first set gathering a lead of four love before their opponents found themselves. St. John’s then evened up at four all, Wanganui got the next game 5-4 and had a good lead in the tenth game which they ultimately lost making it five all. Wanganui then won the. eleventh game and St. John’s the twelfth after many deuces having been called. St. John’s then won the two following games and first set at 8-6. Wanganui again spurted and won the first four games in the second set, St. John’s retaliated by winning the succeeding four making 4 all, the ninth game was a hard fought one which St. John’s won and also the tenth which gave them set and match. MIXED DOUBLES FINAL This match was played on Tuesday afternoon the four players in the final being all St. Johnites. The pairs were Mrs Lane and M. Lampe v. Miss Myers and J. Marshall. The play was very oven, both sides being out to win. The first game ran to several deuces before it was won by Mrs Lane and Lampe off Marshall’s service. The second game went to Miss Myers and Marshall off Lampe’s service making the score 1 all. Lampe and Mrs Lane ran out winners of the first set 6-2. The second set was a little more even, Marshall and Miss Myers annexing it 6-3 after some close and exciting rallies. The third set and the match was won by Mrs Lone and Lampe 6-3. • MEN’S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS. It has been arranged to play the final match, the best of five advantage sets, all over again, commencing at 2 p.m. on Tuesday next (weather permitting) on Victoria Park. The finalists are S. Powdrell and M. Lampe, who commenced the final on Thursday, the failing light stopping play after each player ahd won two sets. DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL Tennis fans wishing to see the doubles final of Wanganui should be on Victoria Park to-day (Saturday) at 1.30. The finalists are Lampe and Tukere (St. John’s) v. S. and J. Powdrell (Wanganui). The match is best of three advantage sets. The former are the present holders and have won the event on several occasions. ST. JOHN’S CLUB The following members have been selected to represent St. John’s against Putiki in the senior match to-day (Saturday) on Victoria Park, commencing at 2 p.m. Mrs Lane,. Miss Myers, Miss .Tones, Mrs Lind, M. Lampe, J. Marshall, A. Russ, A. Lane. The attendance on Saturday last was good and a number of the club championships were got off. Members are requested to play off further rounds over this week end. Those taking part in Putiki match will go down to club court when their matches are finished.
