SUICIDE OR MURDER?
JESSE SMITH’S DEATH. WASHINGTON, March 26. Mr Oliver, in a speech in the House, declared that Jesse Smith may not have suicided. His brains were blown out in the Attorney-General’s Department either by his own hand or another. No autopsy or inquest was held. Smith stood revealed as a collector of graft from whisky deals. He died when the trial of a great bootleg ring in New York was pending, and left his gains to Daugherty. Mr. Oliver demanded that President Coolidge require Daugherty to furnish an accountant’s statement as to Smith’s estate. \
