SAMPLING FOR TESTING
NECESSITY TOR GREAT CARE. A factory manager writes to the Dairyfarmer as follows: —“This importance of the taking of milk samples for herd testing being done by reliable hands was demonstrated last week. The samples of one supplier showed such a variation in comparison with previous tests made that one could only conclude there was something wrong with them. On going into the matter with him he explained that the sampling in this case had been done by his younger brother, and he agreed to take fresh samples himself on the days 1 oilowing. The results are as follows: Samples tak?n Samples taken
You will judge by the foregoing record how important it is that the utmost care should be exercised in the sampling of milk for herd testing purposes. The result shown is very misleading, and is absolutely a waste of time and useless, and there would be no possible hope of any agreement between .the herd test results and the results as shown by the factory or creamery receiving the milk or butter-fat. However, the herd test results arc not done with the object of comparing with the factory returns. If suppliers are under this impression they will be subject to a disappointment. It cannot be expected that samples taken one or two days during the month can compare with samples which are taken for every day during the period of the month. It is just as likely that the results as shown by the herd sampling may be above that shown by the factor, or the reverse may be the order. Herd testing is done with the object of determining the butter-fat value of the cows, and for this purpose is a thoroughly reliable guide.
