AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES. “THE' COVERED WAGON." “The Covered is a great “draw." It is crammed full of real good stuff. The true pioneer spirit petvaces the whole film—the desire to plough and cultivate new lands and to build new homesteads for future generations. The eternal triangle is of course involved in the picture, and the three corners are protruding nearly all the time, though not too prominently. There are some splendid views of the long lines of covered wagons threading their way across the apparently endless "No Man’s Land.” It is a long slow trek, a test of the physical endurance and determination of even the hardiest. The season continues to-night, and the final screening takes place at the matinee on Saturday. "BLUEBEARiD’S STH WIFE.” Commencing to-morrow night will be screened this celebrated picture, based on Lady Forbes-Robertson’a brilliant stage success that has had a record-breaking year in London and Now York. Egyptian scenes with unusual costuming and stage effects are a feature of the picture, "Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife,” a Sam Wood production, starring Gloria Swanson. It. is said that this picture exceeds even “Prodigal Daughters" in brilliancy, and certainly no effort has been spared in this direction. Hunt ley Gordon is Mis s Swanson’s leading man in the production and the strong supporting cast includes, among others, Charles Greene, - Paul Weigel and Robert Agnew. The story is thrilling and there are many situations of real dramatic power. Book at Messrs- H. I. Jones and Son, Ltd. BAND CONCERT. SUNDAY AFTERNOON. The Queen Alexandra Band under the’ direction of Lieut. G. Buckley will give a concert in the Recreation grounds, Wanganui East, commencing at 3 o’clock, next Sunday afternoon. The programme will contain many new items just received from England. La Fee from the suite Francaise and The Warblers’ Serenade are delightful numbers. A fine new march by Franz Von Bloss entitled Victoria, and a selection from Paul) Sinck’s opera, The Pacing Show, will also be included. Many other items will go to make up an enjoyable programme. On Sunday night the band will assist at the benefit concert to be given in His Majesty’s Theatre.

SACRED CONCERT. HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE SUNDAY NEXT. The Swankers’ Club has been successful in securing the services of Mr. Will Goudie, the well known baritone of Wellington, for their concert to be hold at His Majesty’s Theatre on Sunday next after church services have concluded. Mr. Goudie is the possessor of a very fide voice, aud his items should give the greatest of pleasure to patrons of the concert. A duet by Messrs Goudie and Campbell Tmanager of the Bristol Piano Co.) will also prove a great attraction. Both these gentlemen are members of the famous Wellington Quartette. In addition, items by the Queen Alexandra Band, Miss M. ASomes, Mr. Harrold Roberts, Mr. G. Van Heck, Mr. G. Vincent (cornet champion), Mr. P. S. Latham, Miss Monica Bond and Miss Franklyn Browne will be presented, the whole making a very fine programme. Mrs. H. C. Morgan will be accompaniste. The proceeds are in aid of the Swankers distress fund, for owing to the numerous calls on same during the past 12 months this fund is at a low ebb. The Swankers perform great work in relieving distress in the town, and arc entitled to the sympathy of the public. Wo therefore hope that the public will attend the concert in large numbers, and contribute liberally to the silver coin collection at the door. SURPRISE PACKETS. In aid of the Combined Sports’ Association a considerable number of “surprise packets” were made up for disposal at Is each. Many of these have been sold, but some still remain and it is the intention of the.committee to dispose of these this evening, commencing at 7 o’clock, at the bargain price of two for Is. Each of these packets contains goods to the value of Is and in addition there'are some 20 orders for tea, boots, shoes, slippers, a bag of sugar, meat, aluminium ware etc. It is necessary that a complete clearance of the packets be made, so a splendid opportunity will be afforded those in search of bargains. Miss N. Ramsay and Miss HiighcsJohnson notify in another column their assembly class held every Wednesday in McGrucf’s Hall.
