SUNNY LOCH SCORES THRILLING FINISH IN THOMPSON HANDICAP MARTIAN MISS’ BIG SURPRISE / WINS FOR BALLYMENA AND GLOAMING. (By (From Our Special Reporter). WELLINGTON, March 27. Favoured by beautiful weather, the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Autumn meeting was held at Trentham to-day under ideal conditions as regards weather and track. The course and its appointments were in 1 first- class order, and with large fields and few scratchings, the public were provided with some excellent contests. The public were in betting humour, and despite the small turnover in Gloaming’s race, the club finished up £2393 10s ahead of the corresponding day last year. Favourites won the first four races, after Which the dividends were of good proportions. GLOAMING. The withdrawal of Parody left only Quiescent to oppose Gloaming, and as the result was regarded as a foregone conclusion there was only £523 registered on the machine, of which less than£loo was on the two-year-old. Gloaming led all the way, and under a good pull finished five lengths to the good. He paid less than £l. A GOOD ONE. All started in the three-year-old classic. Ballymena as usual was not impressive in his preliminary, but The Polymnian went down well. Ballymena was a firm favourite frqm Parody, who with Tarleton and The Polymnian broke fairly even in the public fancy. The Miller led for the first half mile, closely attended by Ballymena, who was pulling hard, while The Polymnian and Tarleton were also anxious to increase the pace, Parody being last. Running into the back stretch Ballymena went to the front, followed by The Polymnian, with Tarleton next and then Parody. All down the back stretch Ballymena was going well with a lead of two lengths from The Polymnian, who was a similar distance in front of Tarleton, on whom Parody had closed. There was no change rounding the bend, but entering the straight Parody ran up and was the first to challenge. She dropped out at the distance, and although The Polymnian and Tarleton made efforts to reach Ballymena, he won comfortably by two lengths, a good finish between Tarleton and The Polymnian resulting in the defeat of the latter by half a length. Parody was three lengths off, and The Miller two hundred yards away last. Ballymena emphasised his claim to the three-year-old supremacy over a distance in no uncertain manner, and the time, 3 min., has only once been beaten. WIN FOR MUSICAL.

All started in the High Weight Han dicap, and the public went solidly both for Musical and Anxious Moments, ancT they were well dear of the others when the bell stopped. The Curragh, Birkenella and Tigerland gave away some ground at the start through beginning slowly, and Bonecto ran to the front from Black Art, with Musical, Viewpoint and Anxious Moments next in good positions. There was* little change till they approached the home turn, where Musical was going particularly well, and Anxious Moments got a nice run on the rails. Musical headed the field when they reached the straight and looked all over a winner till the last furlong, where The Curragh came up fast from the rear. For a moment it seemed that he would be at the favourite, but Bagby drew the whip and Musical responded, winning by half a length. Viewpoint was two lengths off, followed by Vagabond, Carawock and Anxious Moments. The Curragh appeared to be unlucky. A RUNAWAY VICTORY. Quiescent was the only scratching for the Nursery, and in the big field of 18 youngsters the bracket, Father’s Voice and Bosh, were pronounced favourites, carrying four figures. Tutankhamen was on the rails, with Father’s Voice in the centre of the field, and Lady Bentinck near the outside. Father’s Voice, Fool’s Paradise and Lady Bentinck were soon in their stride, and before a furlong had been covered the favourite was in front. He hit the course proper with a lead of a couple of lengths, going very nicely, and Lady Bentinck and Fool’s Paradise appeared to be the only ones likely to get near him. In the straight Tuahine and Tutankhamen, who had not begun too well, made a run, but Father’s Voice* won very easily by four lengths. Lady Bentinck beat Tuahine by half a length, with Fool’s Paradise right up.

Tutankhamen was a couple of lengths further off, with Corinthie alongside him. THE BIG HANDICAP. Bonnie Winkie, King Merv and Ihapotoa were withdrawn from the big handicap, leaving 21 runners. Murihaupo was a four figure favourite, well clear of Suggestion, who had £lOO advantage of Good Sport. It was a very fine race all the way, and the finish was one of the closest seen in a big race for a long time, five horses passing the post almost in line. When they were let go Murihaupo was quick to find his feet, and he took up the running from Alfort, closely followed by Landslide, Suggestion, Red Wink and Ares, while the rear division comprised Pilliewinkie, Santonio, Rapine and Silver Peak, the latter being slow to move. Alfort had run to the front when two furlongs had been covered, when Landslide had run up to Murihaupo, the nearest to them being Red Wink, Suggestion, Ares and Winning Hit, the order of the remainder showing little change. Rounding into the straight Printemps showed up, Alfort was going strongly, and the field began to close up, the colours of Sunart, on the rails, and Gold Light appearing behind the leaders. Alfort led into the straight, where Landslide and Murihaupo were done with, the next to come on being Suggestion, Red Wink, Winning Hit, Sunart, Ares and Gold Light. They closed up at the distance, where Sunny Loch came with a great run, and getting on terms with the leading bunch in the last stages, he wore them down to win by a short head, with heads between Alfort, Suggestion and Sunart. Right on top of the placed horses finished Red Wink and Gold Light, while loss than half a length further off were Winning Hit, Pilliewinkie and Rapine, the latter two putting in great runs over the concluding stages. Sunart was unlucky, getting disappointed twice during the race. Good Sport began slowly and was never prominent. DANCING DOLL AT LAST. All started in the hack mile, Clandhu being a four figure favourite. Lady Gay took up the running from Clandhu, Kiiceit and Bright Eyes, and this was the order to the straight, where Clandhu was going best. He led from Lady Gay at the distance, where Dancing Doll put in a strong claim, and finishing well scored nicely by half a length from Clandhu, who was under the whip. Imperial Spark was three lengths off in third place, and then came Kilceit, Hyama, Bright Eyes and Stream. The winner won well and paid a good double figure dividend. Of the unplaced lot, Bright Eyes and Hyama caught the eye as likely to do better. Lady Gay pulled hard all the way into the straight, where she stopped quickly. A BIG DIVIDEND. Hipo, Prince Martian and Lady Liffey were scratched for the open sprint, leaving thirteen starters. King Merv was an even money favourite. From a good start Lady Fingers, Backsheesh and Mireusonta began well, and when they were nearing the straight Lady Fingers was in front, and then King Merv, the last two being Refrigeration and Mustard Pot. King Merv and Lady Fingers were together when they straightened up, the former running easily, and at the distance he looked a comfortable winner. His rider, however, failed to withhold a late run by Martian Miss, who beat him to the post by a neck. Razzle Dazzle came fast over the last bit and beat Lady Fingers for third money, being half a length behind King Merv. There was a gap of about thrCe lengths to the next lot, at the head of which was Refrigeration, who put in a good run home. Then came Quest, Solfanello and Mireusonta. Martian Miss paid over a score, while backers of King Merv lost money. A PIQUANT SURPRISE The Harp, Black Rock, Treadwelland Hyama were scratched for the concluding event, and the two top weights, Kenmore and Loyal Maid, found most support in a very good betting race. Piquant drew the extreme outside, and when tliey were let go was quick to begin. She had increased her lead when the straight was reached to three lengths, the most prominent amongst the others being Kenmore and Gold Town. The two latter threw out a challenge, but Piquant finished well and won by half a length, Gold Town wearing down the top weight over the last bit and beating him by a similar margin. Three lengths away ‘Avonlea was in fourth place, and two lengths further off were The Cheat, Kilris and Parorangi. Piquant has improved considerably, but the honours ot the race were with the top weight.
