RIFLE SHOOTING

THE TRENTHAM MEETING THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. (Per Press Association.) TRENTHAM, March 18. The opening day of the National Rifle Association’s meeting was favoured with beautiful weather, and in marked contrast to the drizzling and gusty conditions prevailing a week ago. The morning was exceedingly busy, all the service scries being disposed of by luncheon, and though the weather was so good some of the competitors seemed to lind difficulty in picking out the disc targets against varying backgrounds. Much of the scoring was of poor quality. In fact a great deal of it was made poor in comparison with the work done by the youthful cadets a week ago, under w r hat w’ere very real service conditions, wet, cold, windy weather, as against the windless summer sunshine of to-day. After luncheon the men got down to at the opening match, which, while not counting for the Belt, enables them to get an eye in for the real contest beginning to-morrow with the Marlborough match. The opening event was seven .shots at 300, 500 and 60V yards, and with almost perfect weather the shooting was hot. West, the late Blenhcimitc, who made several bold bids for the championship, came out top with 102—33, 35, 34. West now shoots with the Okawa Club. James, the ex-champion, ran him close with 100 compiled thus, 35, 31, 34, and two others, Carter of Linton —32, 35, 33, and Mills of Dunedin—33, 34, 33 kept him company. It was, in fact, a day of’possibles, several being registered besides those just enumerated. Service Teams’ Championship, which carries with it the possession of the Sir Logan Campbell Shield for a year, awarded on scores made in the matches 1 to 4, teams of five men. It was won by Wanganui Rifle Club (Simmonds, Hudson, King, Hughes, Soler). Score 416. The Pctone Club were runners up with 370, followed by Opaki 362, Karori No. 1 357, Ashburton 332, Kaiapoi 322.
