“DESCENDED FROM MONKEYS”
SPRINGFIELD CITIZENS OBJECT. DARWINIAN THEORY DIVIDES COMMUNITY. Received March 18. 9.40 p.m. NEW YORK, March 17. A telegram from Springfield, Kentucky, says: This town is experiencing troublous times as the result of the evolution theory. Friendships of a lifetime have been rent asunder, deposits withdrawn from one bank and placed in another, and boycotts declared against certain merchants. Heated discussions, approaching dangerouslv near fistic encounters, occur daily, because the Darwinian, or, as it popularly is put, “The Man-deseended-from-mon-key” theory is being taught in the local high school. Kentucky has a law which forbids the teaching of human evolution in those institutions which receive state support. The Springfield churches have alleged that the superintendent of the high school is disobeying the law, and pro-Darwinians have come to his rescue, with turbulent results. Prominent speakers are being brought in by both sides, and enmity is reaching a surprising degree.
