ARBITRATION COURT
AN UNUSUAL APPLICATION. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 6. An unusual application was made to tho Arbitration Court to-day by Mr E. Kennedy, who asked for permission to appear in tho seamen’s dispute proceedings on behalf of the Cooks’ and Stewards’ Union, list it be prejudiced by clause?* in tho seamen’s award. Mr. W. G. Smith, the employers’ representative, objected, contending that if permission were given, chaos would result, for it would establish a precedent for the appearance of other ‘unions indirectly concerned in the maritime industry. After a retirement, his Honour said that a clause in the Act intended to give representation to unregistered bodies such as guilds. Cooks ami stewards were working under separate awards, and were regarded as workers ih separate industries. They did not consider stewards likely to be prejudiced by a new award for seamen, and the Court would guard against this. The application was declined.
