THE WESTMINSTER SEAT. MR. CHURCHILL’S CANDIDATURE. LONDON, March 5. Mr Winston Churchill stated that his candidature for the Westminster Abbey seat was in no wise hostile to the Conservative Party. He recognised that the party has now become the main rallying ground for opponents of the Socialist Party. Conservative leaders in the last King’s Speech announced a broad, progressive social policy which might well have served as a Liberal Government’s programme. Moreover, Mr Baldwin made it clear that he accepted verdict of the election on the tariff, and consequently appealed for Liberal support. Conservatism must win a large me&sure of Liberal support if there was to be effective resistance in the big struggle that was coming soon. Mr Nicholson,' the Conservative candidate, asks ijhat guarantee there is that Mr Churchill will not join the Labour Party within a year. TAXATION AND ESTIMATES. LONDON, March 5. The Daily Mail states that the Hon. Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the Exchequer, hopes to reduce the tax on tea a penny per pound, and correspondingly reduce the sugar tax, also the entertainment tax. The Navy Estimates will be reduced by seven millions, while the Air Force Estimates are to be increased two millions. The total reduction in the Estimates I amounts to forty-five million.
