May 16, 17—Oamaru J.C. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "EARLY BIRD.’’) The Napier Park meeting commences to-day at 11.45 a.m. There are only six in the Hurdles, including Woden and Killard. There do not seem to be many hurdlers in commission at the present time. A better field will parade for the Esk Handicap, for which eleven have paid up. Master Beckwith and Stymie have been racing prominently of late. The Napier Cup has drawn a highclass field, and the ten acceptors present a pretty problem for punters. Bumptious won well at Dannevirke, and with First Salute and Gold Light, should be the hardest to beat.

A very fine lot of fourteen two-year-olds figure in the Sapling Stakes, several of them fashionably bred. Royal Diadem and King’s Folly are a wellperformed duo.

The three top-weights in the Welter Handicap—Barrier, Battle Knight and Tari—appear to have it over those further down the list.

Foreign was finishing on well at Dannevirke a week ago, and the high-ly-bred White Ensign is well spoken of. Both are in the Scurry Hack. There seems to be a dearth of good sprinters over in the Bay, and for the last few Napier Park meetings the open sprint has drawn poor fields. The Flying to day is no exception. Good Sport and Civilform are in a class by themselves.

The day’s sport will conclude with the Rcdcliffe Welter, another horse field. Whariti and The Author showed up at Dannevirke last week.

The winner of the Novices’ Hack at the Marlborough meeting, yesterday, Bonlita, is a three-year-old bay gelding by Boniform —Rosalita. Last season Bonlita was started four' tinges without gaining a place, and had a similar number of outings for once third prior to yesterday. Bonlita is one of Mr. W. R. Kemball’s team.

To-morrow (Saturday) there will be four race meetings in progress. These are the Banks Peninsula, Marlborough, Napier Park and Matamata Clubs’ gatherings. Master Beckwith (Lord Lupin— Miss Beckwith) won the Esk Hack at Napier Park twelve months ago. Master Beckwith is engaged in the same race this afternoon with eleven pounds less on his back.

Winners at the Napier Cup meeting last year who claim engagements again to-day are Master Beckwith, Civilform, Queen’s Ferry ai)d Barrier. Gold Light was unplaced in the Napier Cup last year with Bst 71bs. This, afternoon she will carry 9st 41bs., which is half a stone over weight-for-age. Already in the last six .weeks Gold Light has run second in the Wellington Cup with Bst., won the Wellington R.S. Handicap with Bst 71bs., and third to Lovesign in the Summer Handicap with 9st 41bs.—her weight to-day.

Douglas carried 9st 121bs. when he won the Napier Cup twenty-five years ago, and this is the biggest impost carried to victory in this race. This weight was also carried by that good horse Gasbag when beaten by a length last year by Little River in record time for the race.

Of the last fifteen races for the Napier Cup, no less than ten have been won by horses carrying between 7st Gibs and 7st 131bs. Bumptious is the only one of to-day’s field handicapped within that range. Con. Reed has ridden the winners— SycoraxXand Little River—of the last two Napier Cups. It is, unlikely that the same jockey will have a mount in to-day’s big race, unless he is given the mount on First Salute.

The apprentice C. Smith, who rode Bumptious in the Dannevirke Cup, may have the mount again to-day. At Dannevirke he claimed the full allowance, but he will hot "be able to do so to-day. Bumptiqus will therefore have to carry six pounds more than when he won at Dannevirke. • No doubt the Hawke’s Bay district has had some of the showers we have experienced the last couple of days, and this being so, First Salute will come into the market for the Cup. In the Dannevirke Cup there was 251bs between First Salute and Bumptious. This afternoon there' is but lOlbs., although it has to be borne in mind that Bumptious is on the up grade.
