FRENCH FRAUDS
LONDON, Jan. 18. Hie Paris correspondent of the Daily Chronicle says that an epidemic of frauds in connection with the reconstruction of the devastated areas has been revealed by the Pa liamentary Commission. One textile firm at Lille defrauded the Treasury of 200,000,000 francs. A company dishonestly profited to the extent of 200,000,000 francs. A sugar refinery profited by 70,000,000 francs. Extensive frauds at Dunkirk, with the collusion of public officials, brought in 800,000,000 francs. The method was to divert large consignments of sheet iron intended for buildin?, wh’'-'' -was sent to Calais, Boulogne, and Dunkirk, and shipped overseas, where it wag sold at an immense nrofit. The frauds include several cargoes of sheet iron surreptitiously shipped to Japan after the earthquake. The inquiry has opened.
