SENSATIONAL INCIDENT
FIREMAN BLOWN OUT OF ENGINE TERRIFIC EXPLOSION IN FIREBOX. (Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, Jan. 19. To be blown from the railway engine of a train travelling at full speed was the experience of Swanson, fireman on the last of three special trains conveying 3,000 Christchurch bakers and their families to Timaru for the annual picnic. The accident occurred between Burnham and R-olleston. Swanson was stoking, when a terrific explosion in the furnace blew him out of the engine to the track-side. The driver was also slightly injured, and slightly oazed, but ho recovered, applied the brakes and stopped the train. A relief party hurried back, picked up Swanson, burned and otherwise in a bad way, and conveyed him in the guard’s van to the Ashburton hospital, after stopping at Rakaia for first aid by Dr. Sheffield. The explosion is conjectured to be due to a detonator accidentally left in the coal. Preliminary examination in the hospital indicates that Swanson has a severe fracture of the skull. Ho is still unconscious and is in a very serious condition.
