OIL IN BRITAIN.

GREAT RESOURCES. STARTLING PREDICTION. Received Jan. 20, 11.45 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 19. The Daily Mail states that Dr. Forbes Leslie, an oil expert, lecturing at Bridgewater, predicted that a Watchet mining engineer’s accidental discovery of oil shales extending from Watchet to Combwich would ensure Britain’s independence of foreign oils in war-time. He estimated that there were 9000 million tons of shales beds—the thickest in the world. This would mean that Britain could supply her own cheap power, light and heat for centuries, and would shortly produce petrol and lubrication oils on a big scale.
