THE EARL OF ATHLONE. SUCCESSOR TO PRINCE ARTHUR. The King has approved the appointment of the Earl of Athlone to be Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of the Union of South Africa in succession to Prince Arthur of Con naught, whose period of office Las expired.
The Earl and the Countess of Athlone will probably leave England for South Africa in January. Lord Athlone is the younger brother of the Queen and of the Marquis of Cambridge. In 1914 he was appointed Governor-General of Canada, but did proceed when the war began He married in 1904 Princess Alice, only daughter of the late Duke and Duchess of Albany and cousin of the King. They have a son and a daughter, Lord Tremation and Lady May Cambridge. Lord Athlone was born in 1874, and he is the youngest child of the late Duke and Duchess of Teek, the latter a cousin of Queen Victoria and sistei of the late Duke of Cambridge. He served in Matabeleland in 1896 with the 7th Hussars, in South Africa in 1900 with the 6th Dragoons, and during the European War was mentioned in dispatches and received the C.M.G. the Legion of Honour, rhe Russian Order of St. Anne, and the Croix de Guerre. For years he has been chairman of the Middlesex Hospital, in which both he and Princess Alice have taken the greatest interest, »nd he was also president of the Royal Albert Institute, Windsor.
Ho was formerly Prince Alexander of Teek, and relinquished the title of Prince and the name of Teek and was created Earl of Athione in July 1917. Prince Arthur of Connaught, who Is 40, went to South Africa in 1930.
