THE BETTING TAX

LONDON, Julv 11. The secretary of the Anti-Betting League, giving evidence before the Betting Commission, suggested that if there was a betting tax newspapers should bear a share. They afforded great facilities for procuring betting odds and advices, without which betting could not be conducted. He would not be prepared to suppress early sporting editions, but would exclude selections, betting tips, and track sprints. Thousands betted solely under newspaper information. The tax should be based on the amount staked, not on the odds laid.
