LIQUOR IN KING COUNTRY

DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. (Per Press Assocaition). WELLINGTON, July 12. Opposition to licenses being granted for the sale of alcoholic liquors in the King Country was voiced by a deputation of natives which waited on the Prime Minister to-day. The members of ;,he deputation included Messrs Ngata, Isitt, Tau Henare, Uru, Harris, and J. M. Dickson, M.’sP., and Mr Wirimu Bakihana, M.L.C. Sir Maui Pomare introduced the deputation. One speaker stated that 90 per cent, of the younger generation of Maoris in the ’King Country did not touch liquor, and only 10 per cent, of the European. If the petition was granted the figures might be reversed. Mr Massey said the petition would receive duo and proper consideration by the committee of the House and by the House itself. The proposals in regard to the Licensing Bill had not yet taken shape, but it was practically certain that a Bill would be before Parliament this session, but he could not promise it would become law this year, the reason being that licensing legislation was very contentious.
