A London cable message states that Mr. Cedrid Hicks, of Dunedin, has been awarded the Beit Fellowship.

Mr. G. Castles, advance agent for his sister, Miss Amy Castles, arrived in Wanganui last evening. Miss Amy Castles, supported by her sister, Miss Eileen Castles and other artists will give two concerts in Wanganui on July 2 5 and 26.

Dr. Hicks, Snontioned in a cable message as having been awarded the Beit Research Fellowship in .Medicines, is the first New Zealander to secure this honour. He is the eldest son of the late Mr G. H. Hicks, of Dunedin, who was at one tune a member of the literacy staff of the Otago Daily Times. —Press Assn. Albert Chevalier, a British comedian, is dead. He was born in March, 1861, and made his first public appearance as a child when eight years old. As an actor on the legitimate stage he was for many years associated with Mr. and Mrs. Kendal. John Hare, A. W. Pinero, T. W. Robertson, and Mr. and Mrs. Barcroft. He has given over 1000 Chevalier recitals at Queen’s Hall, London.

Friends of the late Mrs. Rebecca Irvine who died at Dunedin a few days ago, are asked to note that the funeral will leave the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Soeberg, 192 Guyton Street, this morning, at 10.30, for the Wanganui Old Cemetery. Captain Irvine, who is now 88 years of age, has had to remain in Dunedin, the state of his health unfortunately making it impossible for him to travel to Wanganui to attend his wife’s funeral.

Advice has been received by the Inspector of Police that DetectiveSergeant Cameron is to be transferred to Wellington, to fill the vacancy in the Detective Office caused by the transfer of Senior-Detec-tive Lewis. Detective - Sergeant Cameron has been in Wanganui for over three years. He came here from Dunedin, and previous to that ho was stationed at Wellington. He has been a member of the force for 19 years, and 16 years of that ha.ve been spent in the detective branch.
