EASTBOURNE FERRY SERVICE

A DEADLOCK. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 10. Two months ago the Eastbourne Borough Council’s new ferry steamer but has never been put in commission. The vessel cannot reach the stipulated speed, and though various alterations have been made it is still half a knot or so short of specification. In other respect it satisfies requirements. The council refuses to pay the full price and proposes to deduct £250 for every tenth of a knot the steamer is short of the 13{ which were contracted for. The builders refuse to release her till tne full money is paid, contending that speed is a matter for future adjustment. It is a great disappointment, as it was specially desired to obtain a vessel of speed superior to the present boats. The latter are also waiting for overhaul, which cannot take place till the new boat is in commission. Efforts are still being made to arrive at a compromise.
