GALLANT SAILORS

LONDON, Julv 8. The King has awarded Albert Medals to Ernest Joyce and William Richards, also to Victor Hayward (deceased) and Harry Wild (deceased) for gallantry whilst members of Shackleton’s expedition in 1914-17. The party landed at McMurdo Sounds to establish a chain of depots. The steamer Aurora was blown out to sea, but the party carried out their programme, covering 950 miles in 162 days, though A. Spencer Smith had to be dragged on a sledge for 350 miles, dying while 18 miles from his destination. Lieutenant Macintosh also collapsed and had to be carried one hun died miles.
