CLOSED STOCK ROUTES
TEST CASE POSSIBLE. At a meeting of the Waitotara Countv Council yesterday an intimation was received from the Wanganui Borough Council to the decision to close roads on John’s Hill, previously used as stock routes, would not be altered, but that Ballance and Seddon streets at Aramolio would be available for stock traffic. The chairman (Cr Morrison) said that he did not think the amendment would improve the matter, in fact it made the situation worse, for drovers would have to drive stock alongside 11,0 railway lice, which was ridiculous. He added that the stock auctioneers wore prepared to make a test case of the matter. Proceeding, he said that as the County Gouncil was the only local body interested, it was its duty to go into this matter and to make a test case of it. He suggested that a committee should be set. up to interview she Council’s solicitor. In reply to a councillor, Cr. Morrison said that the County Council was never asked to confer with the Borough Council. Al l the Council asked the County Council to do was tc declare certain toads stock routes. The Council had no power to do this; all it could do was to limit the hours over which stock r-r.nld travel on certain roads near the borough boundary. A councillor said that the trouble was caused by residents in the borough on the old stock routes, leaving their gates open. After discussing various legal aspects, it was decided to set up a committee to interview the Council’s solicitor.
