STOCK SALES

The Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society ot N.Z., Ltd., Hawera, report for the week ending June 30: The very boisterous weather has bad its effect on the stock market, but despite this fact a large amount of business has been transacted. During the fortnight we conducted 16 clearing sales, the majority of which were well attended. There is a good demand for all good young Jersey and Holstein cows, but for Shorthorn and the low quality cows of any breeds is not inquired for. Sheep: We have had an outside buyer in the district tor fat sheep, and this combined with the fact since our last report some of the export firms have again been operating, has had a tendency to harden the market, and at the present time it appears to us that those who are holding fat sheep are assured of good prices. Fat ewes are very scarce. The rough weather has restricted business in i the hogget market, but given a few fine days we anticipate a better inquiry. As yet there has not been a great amount of business done in inlamb ewes. Buyers are not inclined to pay the prices asked by vendors. We have made sales of four-year-old good Romney rams at 31s 6d, small framed ewes in lamb to b.f. rams at 29s 6d to 255. Fat cattle: We have effected several sales of fat cattle to go to the outside districts, and this has hardened the market. Vendors are now asking from 22s to 25s per hundred. Good prices seem to be assured to those who can hold their fat cattle for the spring trado. Store cattle: There is a good inquiry for store built—ks. Buyers in the most cases are not particular as to condition, preferring to get them at lower money rather than pay extra for a litle meat. At our last Waverley sale we yarded 120 forward ; conditioned Shorthorn 3J and 4-year I steers. These made up to £6 4s ; per head. Dairy sales: The I dairy sales have been somewhat erI ratic; we have already mentioned high prices have been ruling for herds showing plenty of Jersey and with good records behind them. Ou the other hand the Shorthorn cow and the rough cow are only saleable at low money.
