AN OUTSIDER'S VIEWS.
-I (To the Editor.) t Sir, —May I beg for space In your paper tor these few lines. I have just been reading about the New Zealand Farmers’ Union Conference at Palmerston North, and am astonished at the childish controversyover that little word “union.” Have they so little faith in their union that they are ashamed of it and wish to hide it under another name, or do they think the public so simple that they might mistake them for one of these unions they are so sor« against, or do they thjnk that if they use camouflage they will get the dairy farmers union to join them? I really don’t think they need change for any of these reasons. We live in educated times, and 1 am sure if the dairy farmers see it is to their advantage to join them they will do so without any alteration. And, Sir, 1 don’t think it shows the farmers in a good light to the public, when they bring up such a trivial thing at a conference. It is only a short time ago 1 read In your papei of the annual “smoko” of the Wangaehu branch of the Farmers' Union. When the health of “The Ladies” was proposed, no one seemed capable of replying to it till they had got well through the evening. It may have appeared quite alright to them, but it didn’t look well in print. It gave the impression that they were too boorisli to reply until they had had something to, well. I say inspire them. Now, Sir, you must admit that episodes like these are not to the credit of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union —I am, etc., A WOMAN READER.
