ARMY OF OCCUPATION

AMERICAN DEMAND FOR PAYMENT SETTLED. Received May 27, 8.30 p.m. PARIS, May 26. Controversy over the United States’ demand for payment of one milliard marks on account of the cost of the American army of occupation has been settled by_ agreement between the British, French, Italian and American Governments, which provides for a sum payable in twelve equal instalments. The first is due on December 31. For the first four years the current cost of the Allied army of occupation is to have priority over instalments due to the United States. After that instalments due to the United States con’-' stitute a first charge upon all cash payments by Germany on account, of reparations. The United States has a right to abrogate the agreement, if at any time there is a prospect of full payment being jeopardised within the period, unless satisfactory assurances are given.
