MARTON DISTRICT A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. The annual meeting of the above association was held in the Coronation Hall, Marton, last night. Mr A. Stuart presided over a large attendance of members. Eleventh Annual Report, 1923. The Eleventh Annual Show was a great success from every point of view. The total number of entries was 1338, and constitutes a record for the association, as will be seen from the following compartive table: In the year 1913 the total number of exhibits was 428; 1914, 709; 1915, 744 (in • these three years pigs, school work, and home industries were not available; from 1916 to 1920 the totals were 688, 840, 1089, 1036, and 931 (home industries included). In 1921 school exhibits were added to the schedule, and the total exhibits were 1293. In 1922 the total was 1091. Last year (1923) com stituted a record for the association, when the total exhibits reached 1838. As regards exhibition of stock, it can justly be claimed that it was the best that the Association has yet held. Competition was exceedingly keen in every class of stock, more especially in Jerseys and Holsteins in. the Cattle Section.

The thanks of the committee are due to the gentlemen who acted as judges. The gate takings were a record, Doing double that of the previous show, so that the attendance constituted a record.

Starting the year with an overdraft in the general account of £294 19s Bd, the committee have now reduced it to £53 13s 3d, showing an actual profit on the year’s working of £241 Os lid after paying all administration and office expenses for the year. The prize money totalled £561 15s 6d, and is the chief item. The receipts showed an increase in members’ subscriptions totalling £463, entry fees £221 0s 6d, gates £l3O 16s 6d, donations £216. The’gift sheep and lamn classes resulted in a profit of £5l 15s, and sheep guessing, catalogue advertising, and side shows also showed increased returns.

The showground account shows an in increase in the bank’s overdraft of £2O 13s sd, due to the fact that a 2inch water main was laid to the new showgrounds at a cost of £ll6 19s 7d, and also laid the grounds down in a permanent pasture at a cost of £97 Ils Id. Several of the residents on Bredin’s Line contributed £4O towards the water main. The assets of the association show an excess of liabilities of £2160 13s sd, a position of affairs which should prove very gratifying to the members.

The association has leased two and a-half acres on the new showgrounds to the Marton Lawn Tennis Club for 14 years, and the courts will be finished by next season. An effort was made to get the bridge erected across the Tutaenui Stream in Lower High Street, and plans have now been prepared by Mr. A. Thoms. The annual ball was a great success.

The Society extends its hearty thanks to the Marton Jockey Club for the free use of its course and appointments, and stables. Having had the honour to bo your president for the past three years, 1 am not seeking re-election, so I wish to congratulate the members of the association on having had such a fine energetic working committee and secretary in Mr. A.
