NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Early Bird.”) The Oam.aru meeting is to conclude' to-day. The Auckland, Otaki, and Dunedin j meetings will commence next Saturday, Splendid acceptances have l>een received for next Saturday’s racing at Otaki. Twenty-two remain in the Rau-I kawa Cup. It is a long time since such a fine field accepted fc.r the Raukawa Handi- 1 cap, and it is noted that among these, is Rouen with his lQst 51b, or fix i pounds more than he won with here I last Saturday. Ther© is every prospect of a good i aoe in the sprint, which ha.s drawn eighteen acceptors. The minor event* have all filled lemarkably well, and visitors to this gathering are assured of high class sport. As is usual at Ellerslie gathering, big acceptances have been received for tho Auckland meeting. Seventeen remain in the Great Northern Hurdles, the defections at acceptance time last night being Gladful, Explorer. Vagabond, Whipcord. Passin’ Through. Opiate, Complex. Sunray, Active, Grc.it Fun, Thiganthu, Savory, Mountain Peer and Naughty. A good field of eighteen still figures in the Great Northern Steeplechase, among the principal ones whose names are missing being Explorer, War Loan, First Line, Whipconi. Mia Bella and Polthogue. All the fancied division are in their places. The G.N. Steeplechase is run on Monday week. Zircon is stated to have got a nail in his foot while here, and that will account for his absence from the A.R.C. Cornwall Handicap. However, Comical is left to carry Mi H. M. Camp-bell’s colours in this race. Twenty-six is the big field left in the Cornwall Handicap, among those missing being Tamaroa, Zircon. Tinohoro, Tactful, Sunny Jim, Helen Rufus, I.ochson and others. The hurdler General Petain, put i;p a smart performance yesterday at Oamaru. winning there with 12st- 81bs in tho saddle, and' conceding three stone (421bs) to Mandiake. General Petain is engaged in the Otago Steeplechase on Saturday next with list 131bs, hut is not entered fur the hurdle races. I Tlie winner of yesterday’s oamam I Cup, Angelo, is a lour-year-old gelding by Kilbroney—Angelina, and he has; not won out of his turn. As a three-! year-old Angelo won four races in nine starts, opening his tocring account by . winning the Maiden Plate at Trenthain, and before going to winter quart- j ers he did the hat tuck, taking the Muritai Handicap (Wellington), Sockr nbuinahPuo at dp luPUdihurst Welter <C.J C.) in succession. When racing is next held at Feeding patrons will observe that the judge’s l>ox has been set back some distance. In tlie old position it was right up against the cutside rail, and as tho course is rather narrow there were occasions when viie field finished right "p against the judge, making his task one of considerable difficulty. The alteration will give the judge a much better chance, of carrying out his duties. Tho Welsh Grand National Steeplechase (3| miles) decided at Cardiff on April 3rd, was won by Clorrce (11.5), with Grey Dawn second and Jimmu jhird. Shaun Spadah, who was j tin-ner-up at Aintree, was a starter w ith • 1 2.2, being a good second favourite,! but ho was rever really prominent, and] finished eighth. Punt Gun, the only} other “National” candidate in the race,' carried 11.2 and finished seventh. Nokerakau, the younger fullrsister to Kahikatea and Pitch, anived at Na-! pier from Gies borne by the Amhura, | and have now joined Joy Ride and I Kahikatea, the other members of W. ; Howard’s team at Greenmeadows. By! •he same steamer also came to hand! Mamunga, a hunter owned by Mr Fill-! ton. of Canterbury, and a yearling colt* by Polydamou —Melodise, who w.as lately purchased by Mr C. Elgar, of Feath-1 erston, at a tall price. He is full-! brother to Cantabilo. and was bred by j Air A. F. La wry, of Gisborne. Amongst the equines under the di-| rection of Luke Wilson at Greet-! meadows is Director, the rising thio® '• year-old gelding by Nassau—Culrons. i Director, who was bred by Mr G. L. 1 Stead, is now owned by Air W. G.; Stead. So far this season the young-! Eter has been seen ♦out in pursuit of; 'takes upon four occasions, his effoits] producing a. second and a third placing, the positions having been gained | bv him when he ran second to Queen’s March in the Welcome Stakes at the spring meeting of the Auckland Racing dub, and when ho had Orofino and Miss' Egypt in front of him at the oonclu-! *inn of the argument in the Musket Stakes at the same meeting. Director ’s a full-brother to Mixture and halfbrother to Slavish. the former of whom has ran consistently this season. In a paragraph last week 1 mention-! t toned* (says a Sydney writer on the! AGth inst.), tint Mr G. D. Greenwood! was advertising most of his older horses* for private sale in New Zealand. He* has since decided to send them to Sydney to be offered at auction, and, if it van bo managed, thev will arrive here in time for the A. J 0. Winter Meeting. when there will he many country mid Inter-state visitors in*the city. Messrs H. Chisholm and' Co. will do the veiling, and those advertised in the N.Z. papers were Cupidon, Tressayr, \espucci, Pluto, Farceur, Parody and Heathcote. Gf these the first-mention-ed three are known in Sydney, and in Ibe Dominion Pluto has shown himself n Dominion handicap horse. When V. Sleigh was riding Air E. A. Connolly’s horse, Polytheist, in a gallop 1 at Mentone a fortnight ago, he crashed into a hurdle on tho track and pulled up. Fortunately the horse escaped injury. Investigation revealed that between the half-mile post and the home turn hurdles had been erected by mis-

I creants in four places. In addition, the j harrows used for keeping the course iu order had been drawn out on to the track and overturned, with the spikes ‘ pointing skywards, to the grave danger of any hors© and its rider that care dong. Glass bottles and rubbish had l>een thrown where the horses were I likely to gallop. Th© ranger, Mr Michael ! Brown, on being acquainted of what had happened, quickly started to rem- ' ody matters, but it took him half an . hour to clear the track of obstructions The Mentone police were oommumcaki with and commenced inquiries on tlx spot. Black trackers were brought fron Dadenong, and it is stated that thej tracked foot»narks to a place not faJ from the course. LATEST FROM ELLERSLIE THURSDAY’S GALLOPS. The weather was showery for training operations at Ellerslie on ‘Thursday (says the Star), and the I work recorded was not of a very ini teresting character, very few horses really being on a time-making er--1 rand, while the jumpers were principally confined to pacing on the flat, . there being little jumping, and not : one was sent over the big fences. [The hurdles were up on the outside !of the course proper, but only a J couple of gallops were registered [over them, a few going over the i brush obstacles.
