Skipper Francis, who is appearing at the Grand Theatre, delighted the patrons and staff of the Public Hospital by entertaining them with soug and story, also with several items on his Hawaiian guitar. Mr Stewart Austin ably accompanied on the piano. Mr W. Jameson introduced tho party.

A visitor to our town is the Rev. XV J. Eddy, from Australia, who is repre

senting the World-wide Mission to Lepers, an organisation which is intcr-!e-nominational in chaiacler and international in the scope of its activities. Some 16,000 lepers are at- present bo ing cared for, of whom 5000 are Christians. Some 600 untainted children ci leprous parents aro also being cared for. Mr Eddy’s public engagements while in Wanganui are announced elsewhere.

Mr M. O’Connor, of the local raiyway traffic office, who is transferred to Invercargill on promotion, was yesterday presented with a sol d leather suit case as a token of the esteem in which he was held by the staff. Mr J. W. Reay, on behalf ol the staff, made the presentation and wished Mr O’Connor every success in his southern position. Other members also spoke in glowing terms of Mr O’Connor’s sterling worth. The recipient suitably responded. Mr O’Connor leaves Wanganui by today’s mail train.

Mr. Ewan Campbell, president of the Wanganui Jockey Club, will cole brate his 80th birthday to-day, when he will be entertained by the present stewards and past officials of the club at the Racecourse in the afternoon. Opportunity will be taken to present Mr. Campbell with a piece of silver plate, suitably inscribed. Mr. Campbell has filled nearly every office in the club. Mr. Campbell witnessed the first race meeting held at Wanganui in December, 1848, seventy-five years ago.
