OIL STORES AT WELLINGTON

AN IMPORTANT MOVE. The wharf on Miramar Peninsula, across an arm of Wellington Har hour, is becoming an important adjunct to industry and shipping. Coal is now’ landed there in large quantities for the Wellington Gas Co., and more will be landed in the near future for the city electrical station. Recently the Union Steam Ship Co. purchased the Vacuum Oil Co.’s tanks, which are situated there, and this will necessitate the calling of oil-burning ships for fuel, and of the tank steamers to discharge the necessary supplies. The Port of Wellington is now’ likely to become an important oil centre in connection with the Southern Pacific trade and shipping. Recently the British Imperial Oil Co. purchased 27 acres of land in the centre of Miramar for the. erection of storage tanks for fuel oil, and r»fined oils; also for a canning plant for zenzinc and kerosene. Permits have been obtained by the company to conect its Miramar plant with the wharf by pipe lines. Steamers will discharge bulk oils for the company, or take in oil fuel while lying alongside the w’harf. The whole installation -when completed will necessitate the employment of a large number ot hands, as the activities will be varied, including the distribution of petrol, kerosene, and other oils to various ports.
