LOW NECKS

WHAT JUDGE WOULD DO. AN AMUSING CASE. A bright discussion by Judge and counsel on women's fashions enlivened the Shoreditch County Court, London, recently. Mme. To Paenson, trading as the French Blouse Company, of Amhurst Road Hackney sued Maison Kewe (Limited), costumiers, of High Street, Clapham for £l4 8s for a pink georgette evening dress and three gowns supplied. The defence was that the gowns were cut much too low'. Mr. Robinson (for Mme. Paenson) said the gowns were “Magyar,” and could not be altered. Judge Cluer—Magyar! What is that? Mr. Robinson Goodness only konws! Judge Cluer—Magyar is something in Hungary, but I don’t know if this is intended for abuse. Mme. Paenson—Magyar is the shape. Judge Clour—Oh! nothing more terrible than that? When Mr. Goodman (for the defence asked if the gowns were cut too low, the Judge observed—Nonsense! They cannot be cut too low tor some people. I may like mine up here (putting his hand under his chin), while others like them down to here (putting his hand on his waist). It is all a matter of taste. If a dress was sent to me too low. I should put a bit of flannel round me to keep out the weather.

Later he referred to a Frenchman’s description of a bathing dress as "something that begins nowhere and ends at once.” Mr. Robinson —All necks were wrong, and that is crucial. Judge Cluer For Clapham! (Laughter.) It would seem that Clapham is returning to the good old days of the time of Micawber, and the people there beginning not to undress themselves so much. 1 still suspect that some wear low’-cut dresses, though. His Honour's dissertation seemed unanswerable. Mme. Paenson got her judgment and costs.
