AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

THE GRAND. ELAINE KAMMERSTEIN IN "WHY ANNOUNCE YOUR MARRIAGE?” TO-DAY AT 2.15; TO-NIGHT AT 7.45. There are only two classes of people in the word —those who are married and those who intend to be. Consequently every person in the world is interested in marriage. It is the one object of which people never tire. One of the few successful efforts in this direction is found in this latest of the scries of Elaine Hammerstein successes in Selznick Pictures, “Why Announce Your Marriage?” It is a novel idea, but there is nothing absurd about it. The theme is so real that it wasn't made up by the authors of the story, but taken from actual life. One of the best known woman writers in America decided to marry, but she wanted to retain her freedom and so she and the man she married agreed not to announce their marriage. The news eventually leaked out, and the story was printed in every newspaper in the country. It was the subject of innumerable newspaper editorials and was the gossip of the hour for weeks. This is just what happens in th« Elaine Hammerstein production, “Why Announce Your Marriage?” which opened at the Grand yesterday. It's a great comedy drama and should attract crowded houses for this week-end. The supports include John Gilbert in “The Love Gambler,” Al St, John in comedy, “All Wet,” and “Perils of the Yukon.” The box plan for tonight is open at the Grand Theatre office.

On Monday next the management will introduce to Wanganui Skipper Francis, writer, composer and singer of his own songs. He will appear all next week in conjunction wi*h the picture programme. The first heat of the children’s beauty competition will also commence oq Monday evening.
