INTER-SCHOOLS COMPETITIONS
DISAPPROVED BY SECONDARYSCHOOLS ASSOCIATION. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 17. A meeting of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Association, under Mr J. R. Cresswell, Principal of Wellington College, to-day passed a motion disapproving of the Moascar Cup, Empire Shield, Riddiford Cup, and the Jellicoe Cup. or any other inter-school competition for trophies, as they were thought not to be wholesome. Mr Milner, Principal of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, pointed out that competition for the Moascar Cup had approached a gladiatorial display. He inferred that this had been encouraged by “certain bodies, engaged in fostering sport, in order to improve their position or their finances.” There was a strong body of opinion on the other side, it being urged that this was no business of the conference, and that in any case schools would disregard the decision. A motion, which also was to the effect that the contests should be abandoned, was carried by 16 votes to 10, male delegates only voting.
