THE CANTERBURY FLOODS
SOLDIER SETTLERS WANT ASSISTANCE. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 16. A deputation from the District Council of the Reurned Soldiers’ Association waited on the Canterbury Land Board, suggesting that the Government be urged to give assistance with regard to losses sustained by soldier settlers in connection with the recent floods. Mr H. J. Knight said the floods would have a serious effect on returned soldiers in North Canterbury, particularly those who were on the land. He suggested that relief bo given in the direction of allowing six months grace for the payment of rent and in respect of interest on land board loans given to settlers. Crown Lands Commissioner Bullard said the deputation could rest assured the board would give relief wherever it could. He added that no doubt trouble would be experienced in finding feed for stock during the winter. In some cases it would be a hard winter for soldier settlers. The deputation could tako it that the board would give its j sympathy.
