FIRE ON THE RUAPEHU

AN EXCITING EXPERIENCE. LONDON, May 15. An exciting fire occurred aboard the steamer Ruapehu, lying in dry dock at Blackwall. Two thousand tons of ammonia in the hold ignited. Firemen, with gas masks, succeeded in recovering two of the crew, who were lying unconscious owing to inhaling the fumes. Meanwhile fifteen motor engines with a hundred firemen arrived on the scene. The fire burned -furiously for four hours. The brigades prevented the vessel from becoming entirely involved, after completely flooding the steamer.
