WELLINGTON RAGES
CONCLUDED IN BEAUTIFUL WEATHER
GOLD CUP TO RAPINE
AUTUMN HANDICAP TO GOLD LIGHT
(By Telegraph). (From our Special Representative) M ELLINGTON, April 15. Record crowds were at Trentham for the second day of the Wellington autumn meeting, which concluded in beautiful weather on Saturday. There was hardly a breach of wind, while cumulus clouds hung in the sky throughout which the sun penetrated in fitful bursts of golden sunshine. Big fields were the order of the day, outsiders and favourites coming it _t surprisingly regular inter vals. Betting was divided and brisk, good dividends being the rule. GLADF UL S WINNING DASH. All started in the High Weight Handicap tor junipers and hacks. Souitertna, the first day winner, was best fancied with considerable money for Urgency and Royal Gift. The eleven, got away well, Urgency heading Matatua and Sporite when three turlongs had been covered. Explorer and Sir Wai next. With six furlongs gone Matatua. Explorer and Sponta were in front of a well bunched field. Souitertna had been lying well back nearly last, but hopes were momentarily raised as the favourite started to come through the field, but Loughlin’s brown mare was soon done. Entering the straight Royal Gift was leading, but Morris brought off a brilliant coup on Gladful. coin*-? right through the field to beat Urgency by half a length, with War IjO?c two lengths back, and Royal Gift fourth. A WIN FOR JOY RIDE. The full complement of seventeen faced the starter for the Mutt Handicap. Bodyguard curiously enough was sent out favourite, with Zouave, Joy Ride and Askari next in public favour. Haurangi jumped into the lead, which he held to the straight, where Joy Ride came through nicely from fifth position to win by three lengths, with Askari fourth and the favourite Bodyguard well back. A BIG SURPRISE. Urgency, who had already raced, and Five Eighths were taken out of the Muritai Handicap. Kilbird carried must money, with Vindictive, Lady Ben and Redlogue also well fancied. Lord Desmond and Birkenell" were caught napping at the start, but Princess Fran and Gluement got we'l away and were never headed. Vindictive, Bonrina. and Empyrean were in front of the rest of the bunch. At the distance Parorangi, who had appeared very fit and lively in his preliminary, showed up prominently with Birkenella. who was also full of running. A great finish saw Garrett unmercifully flog Princess Fran, and by magnificent horsemanshill stalled oft' Robiuson on Gluement bv a neck, while Butler on Parorangi was a head away, hardly distinguishable from Birkenella. The winner was unfancied, while unrucky Gluement was paying over a quarter of a eentury for first. GOLD LIGHT A SMART FILLY. Sunart was the only defection from the Autumn Handicap field, and the issue was very open and the pubwere very prodigal in their fancies. King’s Trumpeter loaned well and had the rails. Income looked unready and a trifle stiff, while Roseday had a splendid coat but was a trifle fid
gety. appearing sore. Betting finally resolved itself to Cupidon. Gold Light. King's Trumpeter, Silver Peak. Stork, Roseday and Income in that order.
A good start saw Winning Hit, King’s Trumpeter, who was on the rails for the start, Cupidon and Rose day in front of a very bunched field when passing the stand. Quest an.! Cupidon then took the lead, while at the back Roseday moved up Silver Peak being last at six furlongs post. King’s Trumpeter and Bon netter moved up on the leaders at the bend. Quest leading Winning Hit. while Scotch Mixture had galloped through to third place, with ’Old Light and Roseday close handy. Once in the straight Gold Light Cashed past the leaders, but Bonnettec put up a magnificent finishing ton and jnst failed to beat Gold Light in a stirring finale. King’s Trumpeter was a length away third, with Boadicea right up to him. GAY JULIET WINS. Gay Juliet was the chief choice for the Pacific Handicap, followed by Deluge. Parody. Owlescombe, the Kemball trio and Last Crust. The favourite put up a good race, coming from about fifth in the straight and winning on the rails, though
closely challenged by Last Crust, who sprinted well. Bugle Note was a good third and Deluge fourth. Lady Jellieoe’s Gartmore was twelve lengths behind the field, a bad last.
THE RACE FOR THE GOLD CUP. I Income was of course out of the ; Gold Cup. Rapine was made a big ! odds on favourite. Kick Oil, Scion ! Sunart and Vagabond getting a little (support in that order. The race re . suited in a hollow victory for the i favourite. He took the lead accompanied by Kick Off, and the pair set ;a very slow pace to the last six furi longs, where things brightened up, ■ but in the final gallop in the straight i Rapine had plenty in hand and stall !ed off Kick Off in ridiculously casv ; fashion. Sunart was a good third. Vagabond just beating Scion into the booby place by a neck, the pair being well back. MIREUSONTA BEATS HOT FAVOURITE. Royal Blood was in hot demand for the Suburban Handicap, while Grotesque was second favourite, and Mireusonta and Lucius carried a lot of money, Lovesign and Martian Miss being next in demand in a good betting race. The favourite quickly assumed the lead for five furlongs, but when challenged fell back palpably beaten. Mireusonta just got through (on the rails in a fast finish to pip Triboulet by a neck, with Pluto a ! good third and Grotesque well up • fourth. THE FINAL. Refrigeration was well fancied in ' the Belmont Handicap while Sunny (Vale and Jolly Gay carried a lot of : money. Support was also forthcom- ■ ing for Alabama, Santonio and Lady I Fingers. Refrigeration was very 'restive before the race. Lady Fingers j proved the winner by a very fast finish, getting home from Santon’o. who put up a good race. Dominant was also prominent at the finish in a big field of 22, while the best Re frigeration could do was fourth. DETAILS. [Per Press Association.J WELLINGTON, April 14. NOTES FROM TRENTHAM. After the Gold Cup. the Hon. W. F. Massey was prevailed upon to present the Gold Cup to Mr A. B. Williams. The owner was unfortu nately unable to be present. The Prime Minister in a few happy re marks said that the race had been won by a good horse ably trained and well ridden. He hoped to see many more wins on Trentham course by Mr Williams, who was a good sport and a gentleman. Mr W. R. Kemball was th? unluckiest owner present. He had a dozen representatives in seven out of eight rates, and as many as three in one race. The best they could do was a win by Gladful who paid a thumping dividend. Mr W. Howard was very fortunate. His gelding Joy Ride was a dual winner, while the other horse. Kahikatea. was successful the first day. He will be returning to Gisborne very satisfied with the meeting, as his horses paid fair dividends. THE TOTALISATOR. The tote handled £60,937, compar ed with £66,416 on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £99,44'0). compared with £104,528 4 last year.
