THE SURPLUS
Mr Massey will not be alone in rejoicing over the improvement that has taken place in the finances of the Dominion. He will be realising the truth of the advantage ‘‘Baugh, and the world laughs with you.” His announcement of an estimated surplus of £BOO,OOO is indeed something to rejoice about. The Dominion is in the position of a man who, believing he would have a big overdraft at the end of the year, finds himself with a nice little credit balance. As a matter of fact, New Zealand is two and a half millions better off than Mr Massey calculated when he budgeted expenditure last year. Instead of the year’s working ending with a deficit of £1,688,000, as estimated, there is a credit of £BOO,OOO. It is very satisfactory', and Mr Massey is deserving of credit for this gratifying result. The people of the Dominion may well take heart, and go forward with hopefulness. Apart from a cataclysm, which no man can foretell, there is every reason to believe that New Zealand will soon be well up the ladder to prosperity. Naturally, the effects of a world-wide slump will not disappear in a day. But each day the dread thing is being left further and further behind. New Zealand is a blessed land, which only requires hard work and confidence to draw from it all that people regard as wealth.
