THE PACIFIC EARTHQUAKE.
GREAT DAMAGE IN HAWAII GROUP. SAMOA NOT AFFECTED. Received Feb. 5, 9.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Feb. 4. Further reports in regard to yesterday’s earth disturbances strengthen the belief that the greatest upheaval occurred in the bed of the Pacific. Honolulu despatches state that Silo suffered the greatest damage. Probably fifteen hundred thousand dollars’ worth of wharves and railway bridges were destroyed. Several large liners suffered small damage. Pagopago reports that no shock was felt in Samoa. The United States-Guam cable was broken, but it is not believed that Guam suffered. Hawaiian seismographs registered further shocks, estimated miles distant.
EARTHQUAKE LOCATED.
Received Feb. 5, 8.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 5. The seismograph at Riverview College recorded the earthquake mentioned in yesterday’s American cables. The places of origin were the Aleution Islands.
REGISTERED IN ENGLAND.
Received February 6, 12.35 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 4. The great earthquake shock was felt at Birmingham, where the seismograph needle was violently thrown off the instrument repeatedly. It was also felt at Florence, where the seismograph for five hours registered shocks.
REMARKABLE RECORD BY WELLINGTON SEISMOGRAPH. [Per Press Association]. WELLINGTON, Feb. 5. The Government Seismologist, Mr Adams, recently erected a new Milne Shaw seismograph on a temporary mounting at Victoria College. It secured a remarkable record of the big earthquake reported by cable. The first waves arrived about 5 p.m. on Friday and the record extends for three hours. The maximum amplitude of the earth's movement here was about tw’o-thirds of a milimeter. The record indicates that the origin was approximately 3500 miles away.
