“ANZAC SEA.”
“A MATTER FOR DISCUSSION.” SYDNEY, August 11Sir Edegworth, president of the Australasian Association for the advancement of science, said the proposal tc 3,lter the name of Tasman Sea to “Anzac Sea” would form likely matter for discussion at the next meeting at Wellington in January. The Association is the only body which speaks for New Zealand and Australia,, and such a change would come appropriately from it. The matter would be dealt with by the geographical section. OPPOSED BY MR. JUSTICE CHAPMAN. WELLINGTON, August 11. Mr. Justice Chapman, in a letter to the Press, strongly opposes the proposal to rename Tasman Sea “Anzac Sea.” He points out that the former was deliberately chosen on his suggestion, approved by the Admiralty, and is now on the charts of all nations. It follows the practice commemorating the names of great discoveries, and there is tangible reason for it, Whereas Anzac is inappropriate, inasmuch a,s it commemorates only some of those who fought at Gallipoli. It does not, for instance, represent the French soldiers there, and as such would not recommend itself to them.
