STEADY YOUR NERVES

BY A SPECIALIST. “What do you eat and drink?” is the first question I put to patients who come to me for nerve treatment, and most of them answer, “The usual things.” That is often our greatest mistake. We all are more or less slaves to convention, and seldom stop to study our individual needs.

People who suffer with nerves and depression often fly to drugs without stopping to think they might cure themselves by such simple remedies as changing their diet. A patient suffering from chronic nervous depression came to me recently, and I discovered that his food was killing him by inches. Every morning he ate a large helping of bacon, and washed it down with strong tea- He had steak and chips, and new bread and cheese for lunch, pastry and strong tea in the afternoon, and was fond of cold ham for supper, which he took just before going to bed. I persuaded him to try a fruit breakfast—an apple, orange and dates, with coffee as a drink, boiled fish every other day for his lunch, brown bread and butter and weak tea in the afternoon, and a light supper an hour before bedtime. His cure was gradual, but he is now one of the most cheerful and healthiest of men. The average man should eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and should take meat in moderation as a good body builder.

A fifteen minutes’ smoke and lounge after a meal is , in most cases, an excellent aid to digestion, and you will find you can work better by thus “wasting time wisely."
