WANGANUI POWER BOARD.

VIEWS OF MAYOR OF TAIHAFE. From correspondence appearing in the Tailiape Times, it would' appear that there is an interesting \liscusslon proceeding regarding the policy of the Wanganui-Rangitikei Power Board The following is an extract from one of the letters written by the Mayor Of Taihape, Mr A. J. Joblln: It has already been explained tn your columns that the signatures to the petition were obtained on the expressed, and implied, and melinite understanding in favour. of the Karloi scheme. We were not concerned about any other: neither bad any other been discovered. When the Rangitikei Power Boaryi deserted this project they deserted us. The Hon. Mr. Coates considers we are as well off under the Mangahao scheme as the other, but a great number of us think otherwise, and it is unnecessary to pursue the matter any further just now. Mr Martin, of Wellington, informs its that there j s no authority In the Power Boards’ Act that would allow us to withdraw. Neither the Minister, nor the Power Board (nor Mr Loughnan) could Ho this for us if they wished to The Council’s (and the Borough's) position Is such that we shall have to augment our present plant as soon as possible. Additional current is required now, not in five years’ time; and when this is accomplished we should not be concerned with any outs’Jde Power Board. The only means by which we can get relief is to vote solidly against the Board’s loan proposals and strangle this incubus in its inception. The opposition to the Board’s policy is very strong throughout the district. especially at Wanganui, and as it is necessary to get a three-fifths majority to a Power Board loan, the chance is nil. We must get on at once with our sjcheme.
