SNOW NEAR THE EQUATOR
There are many parts of England— Torquay, for instance, and Falmouth — where snow hardly over la Ils. Yet last November heavy snow fell nearly a thousand miles south of London—that is, North Africa. Snow at times visits countries which we, are accustomed to consider quite semi-tropical. Last «July, for instance, there were great falls of snow in South Africa. Not only was Table Mountain covered, but vast tracts in the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony. In Australia snow is practically unknown. The only exception is the Australian Alps, where the height is so groat that snow lies heavily in winter. Snowfall ranges very far up towards the Equator in South America. Last year they had snow in Buenos Ayres, the capital of the Argentine Republic. ft is in North America that the snow line runs nearest to th© Equator. It has fallen, though only in small showers, as far south as Orange Country, which is only 27 degrees north of the Equator.
