“POPPY DAY.”

GOOD SALE ANTICIPATED LOCALLY.

Wednesday, April 19th, is “Poppy Day,” in Wanganui, when it is anti, cipated that good results will show. It is hoped that on Anzac Dav (Tuesday, April 25th) every person in the town and surrounding districts wil be in possession of a red poppy, in commemoration of the men who gave their lives for the Empire. Supplies of the flowers are limited, and it is anticipated that very few will be available after Wednesday. Those intending to purchase are advised to make swre they obtain the number they require as early as possible. The six thousand odd flowers allocated to Wanganui are to be sold over a very wide district, and it Is quite possible that after the actual sale in the streets on Wednesday, there will be some difficulty in meeting demands. Madame Guerin, director of the French Children’s League, has cabled the N.Z.R.S.A.. that she is forwarding six French flags to be awarded to the six New Zealand towns selling the greatest number of Poppies during the campaign It is hoped that Wanganui will live up to its position as the fifth town of the Dominion.

The object of the campaign is nuite a good one, and is worthy of the support of every New Zealander. The funds derived from the sale, after first paying to the makers (the children in devastated areas of France) the actual cost of making the dowel’s, will be devoted to assisting the unemployed returned sdldiers. The aim of the R.S.A. in assisting Its unemployed members, will contribute In no small way towards coping with New Zealand’s unemployment problem generally. The “Digger” is strongly represented in the ranks of the unemployed, and by assisting him, the R.S.A. Is tn a great measure tackling a Dominion problem, and assisting New Zealand as a whole. A country worth fighting for in war time is worth flighting for a hundred times over In peace time. The R.S.A. makes a Dominion wide appeal to every New Zealander to wear a Poppy on Anzac Day

Members of the Wanganui "Poppy Day” Committee are reminded of the meeting at the R.S.A. Club os Tuesday evening (boat race night), when final arrangements for Wednesday’s sale will be made. “Poppy” headquarters on the day of the sale will be located at the Drill Hall.
