April 15. fl*me good racing was witnessed on the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club's autumn meeting, notwithstanding that the course was heavy owing to recent rain. The Easter Handicap was a fine race. Owing to the state of the course the bracketed pair (Gasbag and G rotesque), both strong compact horses, were given a first rate chance in the heavy going, the pair being the favourite selection. Both went well in the preliminary. Quest, Raceful. Income and Askari also taking the eye. Loyal Irish looked well, though slightly above himself. The story’ of the race is «oou told. After Rational and Gol4en Bubble had ben indulged in the »ead in turn. Income ran to the front. Turning into the straight. Income had Golden Bubble in trouble, and it looked like winning. At the distance the was bunched, with Income still holding a slight advantage, but Gasbag. Grotesque, and Insurrection were all putting in strong claims. The Williams’ pair showed the most dash and together headed. Income 100 yards from the post. In the last 50 yards Grotesque, with a fine finishing effort, drew out to win by a neck, Income, who had stuck well to his task, being a neck behind Gasbag, with Insurrection fourth. The Champagne Stakes showed Rapine in attractive colours. Early In the contest he was well hack. Epitaph being in the lead with Highland and Refinement close up. At the distance, Highland headed the Absurd filly, but Rapine could be seen coming very far on the outside. Epitaph and Highland were fighting out a great battle in the last hundred yards, when Rapine swooped down full of running, going on to win by two lengths. Highland staying better than Epitaph, and beating her by a neck. Refinement was close up fourth. Rapine was responsible for a good performance, and should do better.

The Oaks was a disappointing race, only Cleasanta and Bonny Doreen parading. The former was a warm fa\ourite. Cleasanta ran to the front after a furlong had been traversed, Buchanan, on Bonny Doreen. being content to ride a waiting race. Both were und*r a strong pull on entering the straight. At the distance Bonny Doreen challenged and Cleasanta failing to respond, the former had an easy victory. Buchanan, on the winner, received an ovation at the finish. The Brighton Hurdles saw a good contest between Poanui and Killard. but the latter outstayed his opponent and won in good style. The

winner lias greatly improved, and should win again before long. The President's Handicap saw Glen Canny installed favourite and Unvie Ned second choice. The public opinion proved sound, the finish being between the pair, Uncle Ned prevailing by a nose. Royal Abbey was the early leader, but when the real business commenced only the two were seriously considered. Boomerday was a fair third. TO-DAYS ACCEPTANCES. Atltnmn Handle.ip.—Gasbag 9.4. For the first day of the Australian Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, the weather was bright and warm and the course excellent. The attendance was upwards of ninety thousand, a record. Features of the day’s racing were Beauford’s signal triumph over Eurythmlc and the victory of the popular Julia Grey in the Doncaster Handicap. The conflict between Beauford and Eurythmic aroused intense interest and enthusiasm among sporting circles. It was primarily responsible for the record attendance. The consensus of opinion favoured Eurythmlc’s prospects on the score of ability, but sentiment favoured Beauford, The easy manner in which he vanquished his adversary electrified the spectators, who all joined in wild cheering at the finish, irrespective of whether they backed him or not. Julia Grey, which was always noted for honest work, won comfortably with Toobey in the saddle. Toobey won the last Doncaster on Speciality. The time on each occasion was 1.38. Solfanello -was not sighted at any stage of the race. Results: First Hurdle.—Reducine, 11.6, 1; Prince Stockrington, 9.0, 2; Bendoc 9.11, 3. Five lengths. Time 3.42%. Beauford assumed the lead almost at the commencement and led for the slraight by three lengths, Eurythmic ahead of Sister Olive, with Salitros and David in the rear. Beauford increased the lead at the six furlong post, where it looked a runaway victory. Entering the straight the leader was challenged, but Eurythmic was unequal to the task. Sister Olive failed to overhaul Beauford, who passed the post with two lengths to spare, amidst the wildest enthusiasm. David fourth, and Sa.lltros last, lime 2.32 1-4. Doncaster Handicap.—Julia Grey, 8.12, (Toohey/ 1; Sir Maitland, 8.0, (McLachlan) 2, Tressady Queen, 7.10 (Brown) 3. All the acceptors started. The race created considerably less interest than the Autumn Stakes. Tressady Queen was the first out of the barrier, followed by Braehead and Julia Grey. Isa led into the straight. Julia Grey, always handy, went to the front at the half distance and won by two lengths. Sir Maitland beat Tressady Queen by half a length. Time 1.38.
