JUDGES FORCED TO RETIRE.
NEW QUEENSLAND ACT. A Brisbane correspondent reports that unique proceedings took place in the Supreme Court in that city a few days ago. the occasion being the official retirement, under the Judges Retirement Act which comeg into operation now, of the Chief Justice (Sir Pope Cooper), Mr Justice Reid, and Air Justice Chubb. There was a very large attendance of members of the legal profession and general public.
Mr Feez, K.C., read a letter from the Commonwealth Attorney-General, regretting his inability to be present, and asking to be associated in the expressions of regret at the judge’s retirement. Mr Feez paid a glowing tribute to the retiring judges. They had given the best years of their life to the service of their country at great sacrifice no themselves. “Never in any British community,” he sand, “had such an episode- taken place.” Mr Justice Shand and Mr Justice Lukin both of whom were visibly affected, thanked the retiring judges for the consideration they had always shown them. “Our friendship for one another,” «aid Mr Justice Shand, “cannot be severed even by an Act of Parliament.”
The retiring judges briefly replied, each in tenes broken with emotion. Sir Pope Cooper said that if he had remained in office until January he would have beer. 40 years on the bench.
