BOXING.
IN AUSTRALIA. Received April 16, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, April 16. At the Stadium there was a bumper house to witness a contest between Godfrey and Spargo for the lightweight championship of Australia. For the second time the pair fought a draw. The work of both throughout was smart, clean and snappy, with good footwork. Godfrey on the whole appeared to better advantage. In the fifth round he knocked Spargo down, but the latter quickly recovered and showed improving form in the closing rounds. MELB6URNE, April 15. In the bantam championship, J imply Semens (8.5?) beat Mike Flynn (8.5 J on a foul in the fourteenth round. The winner easily led up to the foul. He 'downed his opponent five times.
IN NEW ZEALAND. (Per Press Association). GREYMOUTH, April 16. The professional boxing match between featherweights Facoory (Auckland), 8.6, and Curran (Greymouth) 8.10, for a purse of £llO, went the full fifteen rounds ■and ended in a draw. There was not a great deal of hitting. CHRISTCHURCH, April 16.
At the King Edward Barracks last night, over 2500 people watched a fight betwen Brian McLeary, of Christchurch, list. 131 b., (ex-amat-eur champion), and Cyril Whittaker, 12st. 71b., of Wellington, for the heavyweight professional boxing championship of New Zealand and a purse of £l7O. The contest went fhe full fifteen rounds. McLeary was declared the winner on points. It was a remarkably clean fight, each man showing the highest sportsmanlike tactics. McLeary did most of the leading, and was certainly the better man. He used his powerful left with great effect. In the last few rounds, Whittaker made repeated unsuccessful efforts to get a knock-out with an ugly looking right uppercut.
