Weather conditions were perfect for the Inter-provincial Fours (two miles), which was rowed to-day in Corsair Bay, Lytteiton Harbour. The water was as smooth as glass, with just the slightest southerly breeze. Result:—Canterbury 1, Otago 2, Marlborough 3, Auckland 4, Wellington 5. The positions drawn were : Auckland on the inside, then Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington and Otago. The boats were got away well in line, and Marlborough took the lead at fortystrokes to the minute, with Canterbury close up. striking thirty-six, followed by Auckland and Otag|o, who were running level, with Wellington close up. These positions were mKntaiiVd for over a quarter of a mile. Then Canterbury went to the front, and at the mile post had a lead of three lengths. Here Otago headed Marlborough, the two Mirth Island crews being some distance away, Wellington acting as whip-pers-in. Just past Rapaki (about a mile and a quarter) the positions were: Canterbury, five lengths ahead of Otago, who were leading Marlborough by about a length, Wellington quite out of the hunt. From this [pint it was quite evident that the race was over stfar as the first place was concernedCanterbury were not only the heavier and the stronger crew, but they were showing superior combination.
