The late Mr William Stocks, whose patent rubber process has just been sold in America for £2,000,000, was a brother of Nurse Martin, of Palmerston North.
Mr John Carroll, a Crimean, Indian Mutiny, and Maori War veteran, died at Kawakawa last wftek, aged 89 years. The deceased was very highly respected.
Mr and Mrs Osborn, who were injured when their house at Wellsford was wrecked by a cyclonic storm or March 26th, are still patients at the Auckland Hospital. Mrs Osborn underwent an X-ray examination, and it is reported that she is progressing favourably. Mr Osborn is also reported to be improving. A very old and well-known lesident of Kakaia, Mr George Edgington, died the other day. He was 70 years of age, and had been 50 years in New Zealand.
Mr R. Marks, assistant master of the Hamilton High School, has been appointed house master of the New Plymouth High School, The death of Mr Frederick Walter Hodder, an early settler •>£ the Wnirarapa district, occurred in Auckland a few days ago. The late Mr Hodder was 75 years of age. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin states that Mr Justice Sim has been granted 12 months’ leave of absence, beginning in June, whene he will visit the Old Country. Mr E .C. Hardie, of the Marton Poet Office clerical staff, has been appointed postmaster at Rarotonga, under a three years’ engagement, and left by the Tahiti on Tuesday.
Sir James Wilson was re-appointed chairman of the Pahneiston North Hospital Board at the Board’s meeting on Thursday. Members made eulogistic references to the valuable service Sir James had given the Board. It is interesting to note that Sir James Wilson has held the position of chairman of the Palmerston North Board for about 22 successive years—a splendid record.
Mr A. D. Paisley, M.A., of the Investigation Staff of the Industries and Commerce Department, is resigning from the Public Service to accept the position of secretary of the Goldlierg Advertising Agency, Ltd. Mr Paisley is one of the most distinguished graduates of Victoria University College, his academic successes including the senior scholarship in philosophy, first-class honours in economics, and the Jacob Joseph scholarship. ,
