Messrs C. F. Millward and Co. advise that the s.s. Storm is due to arrive in Wanganui on Friday from Southern Ports. After discharge she will sail for Wellington and Southern Porth.
The Anchor Company’s new coastal steamer Titoki left Balboa on Saturday direct for Nelson, in continuation of her voyage from London.
The Treloske will now sail from Welliington to-day for Liverpool and Manchester via Monte Video. Port Adelaide will now not leave Wellington until daybreak on Friday for London via Monte Video.
Port Bowen is now due at Wellington to-day at midday from Gisborne to complete Homeward loading. The vessel's departure from Wellington for London via Monte Video has been postponed till Monday evening. Considerable damage was caused to the steamer Australind, now at Auckland, on her recent voyage across the Atlantic. On January 25th the gale, which was from the westerly quarter, carried away the relieveing tackles on the rudder, and as the storm increased in force to a hurricane the captain decided to run her with the sea after an unavailing attempt to bring her head on. She was brought around gradually, the change in direction taking several hours, and it was during this time that she suffered badly. The lifeboats were rolled out of the chocks, the starboard side of the upper bridge ladder was smashed, heavy water being shipped fore and aft ail the time. A boat was smashed and the port accommodation ladder was badly damaged, the companion iadder was carried away at night, the hand steering gear was smashed, and the boatswain’s messroom was carried away bodily. The forecastle skylight also went and the men in the forecastle were flooded out. In the meantime snow and sleet were falling, intermingled with hailstones, and the steamer was pitching and rolling badly on account of being without cargo to steady her. Just before reaching St. John’s the Australind ran into a thick fog, but she eventually got to port, and while there the damage was repaired.
