AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

PARAMOUNT MUNICIPAL PICTURES. A SPLENDID PROGROMME. The great audience nt the Opera House on Saturday night had every reason to wax enthusiastic at the rattling good programme submitted. More interesting than ever was the universal •summing-up of patrons on the third scries of the Vanderberg series of pictures of the African wilds. Heading the programme, however, is the superproduction, which is without doubtacknowledged to be one of the best Paramount’s have yet distributed. This is “The City of Silent Men,” with the popular Thomas Meighan carrying the big part in his usual effective manner. The stoiy deals with a country boy who goes to the city, and falling into the hands of crooks, unconsciously aids in the commission of a crime, and although innocent, is sentenced to prison. He makes his escape and going to California, ho assumes another name and becomes superintendent of a factory. Then love enters his life, and on his wedding day the shadow of his past rises before him. How he regains happiness makes a. delightful story. The famous Bridge of Sighs in the Tombs of New York, the interior of Sing Sing world famous prison—these are admirably shown in Thomas Meighan’s new Paramount su-per-production. This is a remarkable photoplay of prison life based on John A. Moroso’s novel, “The Quarry.” Mr Meighan has the role of a country mechanic. who goes to the big city to obtain work. There are many thrills in the action which is rapid-fire. The leading woman is Lois Wilson, and her work, ns well as that of the supporting players, is excellent. To-night is the last screening of this splendid programme, and another big audience should assemble.

HIS MAJESTY’S A great attraction at His Majesty’s this evening will be Madame Anette Hayward, whose singing of popular and fireside songs has created a sensation in Auckland and elsewhere. A great picture programme will also be shown. “MISS HOOK OF HOLLAND.” The first rehearsal of “Miss Hook of Holland,” the opera which is being produced in May next by the Wanganui Operatic Society, was held on Saturday night. It was an ex.ei'Uouaa.y goou start, and Mrs Spillane, the newly appointed conductor, was more than pleased with the work done. The music is bright and sparkling, and it is gratifying io sea the enthusiasm with which so many of Wanganui’s able vocalists tackled the work. There is every indication that both cast and chorus will be exceptionally strong. The next rehearsals will be held on Wednesday evening and on Saturday evenng tins ween, ano tnereatier on the Monday and Thursday of each week, unless otherwise notified.
