MUTTON AND LAMB.

REASON FOR DROP IN PRICE. STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. March 13. The Minister of Agriculture states that the present reduced c.i.f. offers of New Zealand mutton and lamb are stated to be due to expected heavy arrivals in the United Kingdom in March and April. But the statistical position does not justify these statements in view of the fact that the. High Commissioner’s cable of March 11th states that stocks of old season’s meat are small and new season’s in short supply. There would appear to be no reason to anticipate a reduction in the London market. The arrivals of New Zealand meat on the Ixmdon market this season, and the anticipated arrivals to the end of April are as follows :—■

The balance in store in New Zealand on 28th February, 1921. was 3,355,507 and the balance in store in New Zealand on 28th February, 1922, was 1,739.271. It is significant that the It is significant that the prices quoted for new season’s meat in the United Kingdom immediately after the removal of Government control on 31st March. 1921. were: Light weight mutton to 9d. heavy weight mutton 7|d to B|d, lamb 12d to 13d. To-day’s prices quoted by the High Commissioner are: Light weight mutton 7ld to Bd, heavy weight mutton GJd to 7d. North Island lamb lid to lljd, (no Canterbury on the market). In view of the certainty of reduced export for tht season and provided there is no manipulation of the market in the interests of individuals, New Zealand producers should be assured of a reasonable return for all mutton and lamb shipped during the season.
